White Cane Day is a yearly national day of observance established by President Lyndon Johnson in 1964. The day is set aside to celebrate the many achievements of people who are blind and visually impaired, and their important symbol of independence, the white cane.

Over 150 blind and visually impaired people, as well as, many sighted volunteers will participate in this annual celebration beginning at 601 SW 8th Ave. and proceeding down 8th street and then back to Miami Lighthouse’s campus.

This is the one time of year we ask our grateful clients to give back to this remarkable place that many call their second home. Event sponsors include presenting sponsors Florida Blue, High Standard Home Care and Uber, along with McDonald’s, Starbucks, OrCam, Vispero, Ambutech, Lions for the Blind, TracFone and others.

Arya Acle

My name is Arya Acle and I’m a student at the Miami Lighthouse’s Learning Center for Children. My mom wrote this about our great experiences here:

Our great joy is our children. We cannot imagine life without them. One of the most difficult things for any parent is entrusting the health and well-being of their child to another. When your child has needs unique to them, that trust becomes even harder to earn. When our daughter first started at the Miami Lighthouse, we were terrified. It did not take long for that terror to turn into joy. The kindness, smarts, and perseverance of the program, its teachers, and volunteers cannot be overstated. They take great care of the children, teaching them not only the usual curriculum, but that rarest of all teachings-- how to be kind and find your place in this world. That no matter who you are, and what you might or might not be able to physically do, the world needs you, and you must find that role and fulfill it.

Lighthouses are meant to guide ships to safety, to home, during the darkest of nights. We are glad that we have found ours.
