White Cane Day is a yearly national day of observance established by President Lyndon Johnson in 1964. The day is set aside to celebrate the many achievements of people who are blind and visually impaired, and their important symbol of independence, the white cane.

Over 150 blind and visually impaired people, as well as, many sighted volunteers will participate in this annual celebration beginning at 601 SW 8th Ave. and proceeding down 8th street and then back to Miami Lighthouse’s campus.

This is the one time of year we ask our grateful clients to give back to this remarkable place that many call their second home. Event sponsors include presenting sponsors Florida Blue, High Standard Home Care and Uber, along with McDonald’s, Starbucks, OrCam, Vispero, Ambutech, Lions for the Blind, TracFone and others.

Lauren Horrigan

Lauren Horrigan

My name is Lauren Horrigan and I’m a student at the Miami Lighthouse for the Blind’s Learning Center for Children. My mom wrote this testimonial in honor of White Cane Day to summarize our great experiences:

I have always known my daughter would be capable of doing extraordinary things. However, before participating in services offered by the Miami Lighthouse, it seemed that most of her teachers were discouraged. At the age of three, Lauren was only communicating with one word phrases and often had behavioral issues due to this inability to express her wants and needs. She was struggling to make friends or even interact with her classmates. Once Lauren began attending the Lighthouse Learning Center, there was a complete shift in her progression as a direct result of the care and effort provided by her teachers and therapists.

Lauren is now communicating in complete sentences, building strong bonds with her fellow students, and learning many independent living skills. Miami Lighthouse has truly been a guiding light for Lauren and my family.

Please make a gift to support her on White Cane Day by clicking the DONATE NOW button below. Your donation will help continue the many life affirming and transformational programs Miami Lighthouse offers.
