White Cane Day is a yearly national day of observance established by President Lyndon Johnson in 1964. The day is set aside to celebrate the many achievements of people who are blind and visually impaired, and their important symbol of independence, the white cane.
Over 150 blind and visually impaired people, as well as, many sighted volunteers will participate in this annual celebration beginning at 601 SW 8th Ave. and proceeding down 8th street and then back to Miami Lighthouse’s campus.
This is the one time of year we ask our grateful clients to give back to this remarkable place that many call their second home. Event sponsors include presenting sponsors Florida Blue, High Standard Home Care and Uber, along with McDonald’s, Starbucks, OrCam, Vispero, Ambutech, Lions for the Blind, TracFone and others.
Lorraine Clement
My name is Lorraine Clement and I am a 70 year old client in the Social Group Health and Activities Program at Miami Lighthouse. I began my training here in the 1980s after being diagnosed with optic nerve issues that left me legally blind. I started in the Independent Living Program to help me gain much needed skills while adjusting to my vision loss. Since then, I have gone through the GED program and I have successfully graduated and obtained my GED.
Miami Lighthouse has done so much for me. I was able to finally finish school thanks to the program and opportunities that I was given here. They gave me a chance to study and learn using technology like the CCTV. Miami Lighthouse is important to me because of all of the wonderful people who work here and also because of the friends I have made. This is like a second home to me as here, I’m made to feel like a whole person and not just someone with a visual impairment.
