White Cane Day is a yearly national day of observance established by President Lyndon Johnson in 1964. The day is set aside to celebrate the many achievements of people who are blind and visually impaired, and their important symbol of independence, the white cane.
Over 150 blind and visually impaired people, as well as, many sighted volunteers will participate in this annual celebration beginning at 601 SW 8th Ave. and proceeding down 8th street and then back to Miami Lighthouse’s campus.
This is the one time of year we ask our grateful clients to give back to this remarkable place that many call their second home. Event sponsors include presenting sponsors Florida Blue, High Standard Home Care and Uber, along with McDonald’s, Starbucks, OrCam, Vispero, Ambutech, Lions for the Blind, TracFone and others.
My name is Steve Podley. I was born and raised in Miami, Florida where I am currently a student at Miami Lighthouse for the Blind.
I am employed at the Miami International Airport where I have been the superintendent of telecommunications for twenty-seven years.
In 1994, a friend who couldn't see told me about Miami Lighthouse. I reached out, received information and ultimately was enrolled
for classes in their Music Midi program.
Miami Lighthouse means a great deal to me because it is a wonderful place to meet people and it offers tremendous educational opportunities. It is from here that I learned the essential skills I needed to become completely independent. Additionally, Miami Lighthouse is where I learned the music midi skills to work as a sound engineer in a professional music recording studio. Most recently, I was featured on CBS-4 Mentoring Matters as a mentor to others at Miami Lighthouse which was extremely rewarding.
